The integrated data systems which have been developed by Google have the ability to tie together information from many different sources. Due to the fact that Google “crawls” the web and collects information from all over the internet, this system is able to bring together the collective knowledge of the internet. While this provides a very powerful research tool, this can also lead people to personal information which you may not have wanted published. One significant problem with the internet is that information cannot be taken down if someone objects and the legal basis for policing the internet is shaky at best. A court in one country cannot necessarily order that content be taken down off a server in another country. Your Google account also provides a significant level of convergence. I have a Google account which links together my Gmail, Blogger blogs, Picasa webalbums, and my Google Docs. While I find it very convenient to have all of this integrated and easy to access, this could cause a problem if someone gained unauthorized access. It also would make it very easy for the government to monitor because they only need a warrant against one large company in order to see all of this. The bottom line is that data convergence can provide us with a wider breadth of knowledge and can be very convenient, but it also poses a significant level of danger.
