The Memepunks article brought up the possibility of artificial intelligence. It argues that the masterminds behind Google have perhaps the best chance of developing an artificial intelligence which could more accurately understand the needs of its users. However, I agree with some of the posted comments on the article. I am a skeptic of so called “artificial intelligence” and I think that the current numeric limitations of technology prevent the replication of intelligence. I think that the Rational Choice Theory example was a good one. The Rational Choice Theory only works when humans are acting rationally. However, humans do not always act rationally. There are variables which cannot be taken into account to replicate intelligence, and this would be emotions and irrational choices. You cannot numerically account for these and therefore a computer would never be able to understand them. I am intrigued however by this new “structural math” which is being developed. I don’t know if you can necessarily create a structured system to replicate intelligence, but I suppose that this is a step in the right direction. We can improve the Google algorithms and make the system better, however I am doubtful that a system will ever be able to truly replicate intelligence.
