Globalization

Hands reaching out to create connections across the globe.

Globalization is the culmination of many different technologies, political, and economic conditions. The increasing interconnection of global communities is leading to the creation of one global economy. This increasing interdependence means that previously isolated societies will have greater access to resources and goods, but at the same time will rely on other regions of the world for goods. While just five decades ago a natural disaster on the other side of the world would've had a rather neglibile effect on life. However as we have seen from major natural disasters as well as significant political and economic changes in the past few decades, these events can have a global impact. The challenge for countries will be to use cheaper import goods to their advantage while mantaining domestic production capacity to ensure their political and economic independence. The global job market will also pose a looming threat in the upcoming years. Workers will need to work harder to compete in a truly global job market. Language skills will become increasingly more important, with English still being an important language but Mandarin Chinese quickly becoming a critical language skill. The key will be to have generalized skills which will enable workers to adapt and change to a new job market quickly, but also to have niche skills which make them valuable workers who cannot be easily replaced. These new global citizens will need to pay close attention to events outside of their local, regional, or national community and become involved and engaged in the new global community.
