Genetic engineering is a field which has garnered a significant amount of controversy. The debate over genetically modified foods (called "frankenfood" by its detractors) has been intense with some nations banning or attempting to curb the products while other countries have contributed money towards research. Supporters of the technology have argued that the products can last longer and be free of the most common agrictulural diseases, requiring less pesticide. Critics question what effect the foods will have on humans and whether it could possibly have a negative effect on us. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, genetic engineering will play a huge role in the future. There is significant potential for benefitting from genetic modification. These superengineered humans could have an immunity to certain common diseases and increased physical and mental capabilities. Whether to engage in the practice will be up to each individual's conscience, but the potential benefits are undeniable. However, there will also be a need to retain a healthy level of skepticism. This technology is highly experimental and genetic projects gone awry could be absolutely devastating.
