Gattaca
This story represents the fear of what may happen in the not too distant future with the wide knowledge of genetic material and the link between genes and physical disease. The film stars Ethan Hawk as Vincent, a naturally born and un-enhanced human with asthma, myopia and a congenital heart defect. In the Gattaca world, a person's genes decides the limits to their achievement rather then their ability. Genetically inferior and in-valid people are given the menial tasks while genetically superior and valid people have no limits set on their final social status. Thus, Vincent's dreams of becoming an astronaut cannot be realized without buying a new identity from Jerome a former swimmer who attempts suicide after winning only a silver metal in his most recent competition. Jerome's attempted suicide leaves him paralyzed further preventing him for achieving his goals. With Jerome's genetic identity, Vincent is hired by one of the most prestigious aerospace firms, the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation, gaining a spot on a mission to Saturn and ultimately achieving his goal of going into space. The film highlights the critical question addressing how limited we really are by our genes. This is most prevalent by Jerome's final suicide during Vincent's take off. As the in-valid Vincent achieves his dreams, valid Jerome finishes his previously failed suicidal attempts (Gattaca, 1997).
