Stephen Speilberg's film A.I. was released in 2001. The story surrounds itself around an artificiall intellgent being or "mecha" with the ability to love. While this story has been told before, the film became popular.
The mecha designed to look like a child and "feel" the love of it's owners is named David. Through a series of dificulties fitting into a family with sibling rivalry, David is left to live as an uregistered mecha. He is soon after captured, almost killed, and framed for murder. Perhaps, one of the most breathtaking moment of the film is when David attempts suicide. In the end, David gets the bittersweet happy ending he was searching for.
Themes of the story Pinnocchio are interwoven with the plot and David's search for the Blue Fairy to become a real boy. -- Natalie Minchillo
