Sleepers & Sleepless:

Today, individuals live in a world where they do not have to worry about the advantages of people who can physically live without sleep. Unfortunately, with the ever growing technology and curiosity of people experimenting with genetic engineering this could someday be a reality.

In the book Beggars in Spain, the author gave readers a variety of problems that could arise from having what she called, sleepers and the sleepless. When comparing the sleeper and sleepless, the major reason for the dilemma between the two is that the sleepers lose so much time sleeping, that the sleepless advance much quicker in every aspect of life. In the Beggar in Spain, Kress shows how the economy will be affected. In some cities sleepless individual were not allowed to take the work of a sleeper who worked for a 24 hour mart or run a 24 hour mart.

In schools, the sleepless where much more advanced learners than sleepers. At a much younger age the sleepless would finish school and be able to help society advance. Again, this would lead everyone to believe that eventually the sleepless would be so advanced and dominate, that they would take over. In the book this leads the sleepers and the sleepless to go in two opposite directions, causing the growth of the Sanctuary.
