Introduction:
Written by Nancy Kress, Beggars in Spain is a book that contains a scenario that could be a reality in the near future. In the world that Kress created in the book Beggars in Spain, genetic engineering is not a thought, it is a reality and is a part of life. In this world one of the main concerns is those who have been genetically engineered to be "sleepless" and those that have not been genetically engineered as "sleepers". Everything thing from the economy to physical/mental development took a drastic change with the emergence of the sleepless.
As readers get deeper and deeper into this story, they can see how sleep schedules versus no sleep schedules can be the reason for many new problems. As seen in Beggars in Spain, something like this could lead to a divide in society. Kress portrayed that divide in society when she introduced the "Sanctuary". The Sanctuary was a community in Up-State New York that was designates for only those that are sleepless. As this website continues, viewers will see more of the troubles faced with the coexistence of sleepers and the sleepless.
