The term "Singularity" was first used in reference to the Technological Singularity in the 1980s when mathematician Verner Vinge first used the term to describe what had been referred to as an "Intelligence Explosion." The Singularity would mark the time when an ultra-intelligent machine had been created that could surpass humans. Vinge elaborated on what could be described as a feedback loop in which superhuman machines continually upgrade themselves to levels far beyond their human creators.
In more recent times, futurist Ray Kurzweil has devoted much time to the subject of the Singularity. In his mind, the Singularity and Moore's Law are linked. According to Kurzweil, the technological advances over time will be exponential when compared with previous advances through history. Following this logic, the Singularity is inevitable. We just have to wait and see.
