Survival Skills for the 21st Century:Media Literacy

Collage of images of publications and media materials

In today's society, one can barely get out of bed before literally being bombarded with media from a variety of different sources. Magazines, newspapers, the radio, the internet, advertisements, and billboards make up a small fraction of the different ways in which humans are constantly exposed to media. If the media is as pervasive in our lives as it is right now, there is no telling how things will differ with the emergence of new and advanced technologies. With that in mind, it will become increasingly more important to ensure that people continue to stay current with the media. That is to say, it is very important to ensure that people are media literate. It is (and will continue to be) necessary for people to be able to engage with different media sources in order to gain information. People are information seekers, and in an advanced and ever changing society, people will still need to be able to use and understand the media effectively.
