| The Beastie Boys were the first important white rap group to emerge in the mainstream. They received early criticism for being "culture pirates," thriving on the popularity of early rap music that was gaining popularity in the burroughs of New York. Far from pirates, the Beastie Boys are cyberpunks that revolutionized the form of the hip-hop crew. Although a portion of their work is highly commercialized, such songs as "Fight for your Right to Party," spoke to an emerging generation of youth who were questioning the authority and customs of their environment. Ignoring critics and developing a unique style, the Beastie Boys helped propel the dynamics of hip-hop music. They are the epitome of the innovation and independence that embodies what it means to be "cyberpunk." |
