Some Dangers of Technology
Military Technology
Some have argued that, since about 1500, war has been "total," employing every available technology and consuming every available resource. This is the war of the modern period. Now, however, total war would mean total annihilation of the human race and the planet Earth. So war has shifted gears; it has become postmodern. The question, though, is whether this change is complete. Will the nations of the world be able to resist using new technologies to bring about a new total war, even knowing that doing so would probably spell the end of humankind? Many worry that this is not the case. And, as new technologies develop, the potential catastrophy that is the return of total war becomes even more bleak.
