Virtual Worlds

My experience with Second Life in class was one of mixed and unresolved feelings. I find it very interesting that people want to create a representation of themselves in this virtual space and interact with other people. I do see the benefits that it provides some marginalized subcultures and people who do not feel comfortable and accepted in their everyday lives. I have heard stories about people making great friendships, finding a support group, running and business and even falling in love in Second Life but I still do not understand it.

I think it is hard for me to get past the very heavy dark counter-culture that seems to be inseparable from any discussion of Second Life. We had the discussion in class where I said I do not think that just because you are in an imaginary virtual space you are allowed to do things that you would not reasonably do in the real world. Someone said that was basically a condemnation of every video game ever to exist. I think there is a difference to Second Life though because at a very basic level it is creating a world parallel to the real world. Actions are motivated by the individual, just like that are in real life. Other video games have an objective, a game plan and even character traits written into the program, there is not as much free will in creating your own future.
